To be honest I don’t really read Penny Arcade so I can’t say much for whether it is good, but they are still a good example – they are like the royalty of the webcomic world, at least in terms of income.

Popularity is a lot less subjective than taste, so I wanted to try and keep my opinions on individual content out of it.

That’s a fair point. I think the existence of music stores is going to help decrease the decline of the big labels, but in the long run they will eventually ditch them in favour of other music. They’ll probably take a cut of sales of about 5-20% depending on greed/market share and such, which is likely more than they were making by selling label-pushed CDs anyway.

I have one comment though: The small middlemen will never die, because you forgot to think about the store owner that SELL the label music. A minor but significant stakeholder in the whole P2P issue.
