Sweden’s new IPRED legislation and attempts by politicians to demonize file-sharing don’t seem to be working.

The entertainment industries like everyone to believe that file-sharing is the same as shoplifting, but the number of Swedes who believe downloading copyright material is the same as theft, is decreasing

According to the new MMS report “Moving pictures 2009:2″, just 30 percent of people aged 16-65 think that downloading copyrighted material is tantamount to theft. Last year, the figure was 38 percent. Of the male 16-25 year olds questioned, the figure is down to 20 per cent year on year.

Tobias Lidholm, project manager at MMS, said that although IPRED and the Pirate Bay trial have been in the spotlight this year, “it is noteworthy that more seem to accept illegal downloading now than before.”

57 percent of 16 to 65-year-olds questioned believe that there are no legal alternatives to illegal file sharing.
