The MPAA has teamed up with the Indian movie industry to educate theater staff about camcorder piracy as more and more Hollywood films are set for release in the region.

An anti-camming initiative has been launched by MPAA CEO Dan Glickman and representatives from the Indian movie industry.

The ‘Make a Difference’ campaign will raise awareness of the camcorder ‘problem’ and see the MPAA set up training sessions for theater employees

So why the sudden interest in India? An increasing number of Hollywood movies are set for official release in the country and the MPAA is concerned that after making progress in reducing the availability of quality cams originating from elsewhere in the world, India risks becoming a hotbed of camming activity.

“As we continue to release more Hollywood titles in India, the number of camcords coming out of the country is likely to rise. However, while piracy – particularly camcorder source piracy – is damaging to the movie business, it need not be inevitable,” said MPAA CEO Dan Glickman, currently in India on a visit.

“We are sure that the ‘Make A Difference’ training package for cinema staff will go a long way in helping them prevent camcording, identify camcorders as well as assist enforcement authorities when they are caught making these recordings,” he added
