Sony PSP Go Hacked

The brand new PSP Go handheld console has been hacked. Going by previous attacks against Sony’s machine, fully fledged homebrew and then pirate game playability will likely follow in the weeks and months to come.

Sony’s new version of the popular Playstation Portable is a strange beast.

While nice to look at, PSP Go has a smaller screen than its previous incarnation and cannot play any UMDs, so if you previously bought games and movies in that format for your earlier device they are now completely useless – nice one Sony.

The other thing Sony has gotten rid of is its removable battery – a nod to killing Pandora – but that hasn’t stopped the hackers.

According to a report today, PSP Go has at least partially fallen to a hacker known as FreePlay. The hack isn’t a complete domination of the new device, but its a notable first step.

Freeplay is said to have used an exploit available through an existing game, but right at this moment he is keeping the title to himself.

“I won’t be releasing this or divulging the name of the game involved. It’s a proof-of-concept, and it may become more developed privately, but until there’s a worthwhile reason to release it it’ll stay private. I’d prefer that Sony not patch it before it becomes really useful,” he told PSP Updates.

Right at this moment playing pirate games is not yet possible. However, experience of hacks on Sony’s previous PSP versions indicates that this functionality will come – it’s just a question of time.

Sony should just suck it up and admit they’ll never win.

  • Yep, I agree. Not to mention the fact that the harder they try and stop it, the more hackers there will be.
Also what’s the bloody deal with making UMD movies unusable? Stupid idiots!

  • UMD movies….for the loss. F**k $ony!

  • [...] il n’aura fallu que quelques mois pour que les tentatives de piratage ne finissent par aboutir et ce, malgré la présence d’une batterie inamovible. Certes, la technique n’est pas [...]
