Mandelson “Hoodwinked” On File-Sharing, Says MP

After earlier labeling throttling and disconnection measures against file-sharers as “futile”, Labour Party MP Tom Watson says that Peter Mandelson has been “hoodwinked” on piracy.

Tom WatsonWith the support of dozens of other politicians, last month UK Labour Party MP Tom Watson tabled an Early Day Motion in which he questioned government proposals to disconnect file-sharers.

Calling the measures “futile”, Watson said those accused deserved the right to legal redress.

Watson also says that he has seen no evidence that these measures will decrease piracy, nor will the industry benefit financially.

“I don’t think they will bring income in to the music industry,” he said.

Now the outspoken MP says that Lord Mandelson has been deceived by the likes of IFPI and the BPI into supporting the proposals for throttling and disconnections.

“I admire Peter Mandelson’s attempt to support the creative industries but I am afraid he has been hoodwinked by the music industry lobby.”

There are others, however, who feel that Mandelson has simply laid a trap for the opposition Conservative Party. Time will tell, but in any event, this issue is far from done.

And here’s why Mandelson will fail: He hasn’t heard of sseedboxes. Unless ISP’s start disconnecting us for excessive use of FTP, people who are serious about piracy will continue to get all the free movies, music, software, and pictures of cute girls that they want via BitTorrent and P2P.

  • ftp on seed boxes are not required anymore. You can get http seedboxes or regular https or https or other port downloads from many services. I haven’t used an ftp since I don’t know when but that doesn’t mean that I don’t use a seedbox. It just looks like regular https traffic now so no one can see whats in it still.
