Joss Stone Reveals Why Lily Allen Hates Piracy
Lily Allen, blah blah, piracy, downloading, It’s Not Alright, etc etc. Cutting through all the nonsense, comes a beautiful ray of light. Joss Stone says Lily hates piracy because she can’t sing.
“Yeah, I love it. I think it’s brilliant and I’ll tell you why,” Joss Stone said last year, referring to music piracy.
“Music should be shared. The only part about music that I dislike is the business that is attached to it. Now, if music is free, then there is no business, there is just music. So, I like it, I think that we should share.”
“I don’t care how you hear it as long as you hear it,” she added. “As long as you come to my show, and have a great time listening to the live show it’s totally cool. I don’t mind. I’m happy that they hear it.”
Now in a new interview, Joss says she knows why Lily Allen is so upset about piracy.
“She needs to sell records because she’s not a singer, and that’s not an offense to her because I think that she knows that too,” says Stone.
“..when musicians are really making real music people come to the show and that’s what we make our money from, from playing live. And I think it’s probably harder for an artist like Lily and many other pop acts. It’s really about the track and about their personality and their celebrity and that’s how they make their money is selling those records.”
Stone says that Lily cannot win a fight against music piracy, and for that matter, neither can anyone else.
“So let’s just accept it and let’s see it as something that can be beautiful and it might change music for the better,” she says pragmatically. “It might sort the weeds from the flowers.”
Remaining surprisingly grounded for someone who has done very well in the world of pop, Stone implies there are elements who are just a little bit greedy.
“Who said that musicians have to be millionaires? Who made this a rule? We don’t need that much money. We just don’t. We only need enough to make music and to eat and to go on tour.”
Clearly when you set your sights on a realistic return on your investment rather than ultimate money, power and glory, life is so much more simple – and altogether less bitter.
Nice one Joss. Finally someone without a chip on their shoulder.

Who gives a fuck about that Lily in general and her motives in particular?
Ok That it!
Just getting on Amazon to buy a Joss Stone’s Album! I just love the barefooted songstress ^_^
haha, wow. love the gossip.
Finally some sense.
She’s absolutely correct about Lily Allen too, sorry Lily.
It’s only fair to point out that Joss Stone doesn’t really write her own material. Producers and pro songwriters cowrite eveything for her. It’s easy to be easy going about it when she is basically a non writing performer who has other people doing the heavy lifting in the studio or her.
I hate to break this to you, G, but she does write, sing, and produce her own material. She has other people she’s chosen to work with help with her it too, such as with string arrangements and so on.
Yes, that’s co-writing, if you look at the credits of other albums you might have, they’ve probably been co-written too.
Yes, Lily Allen’s new album was co-written and composed too.
Unfortunately, it’s pretty hard to do everything yourself when recording, in addition to singing, such as playing all of the instruments.
I assume you would play everything yourself, from everything in the orchestra too.
Joss Stone also acts as executive producer, art direction, and recruitment.
Frankly it’s easy to understand why she’s pro-piracy, the music labels have stifled freedom for a long time for artists, and they’ve done it with her too, which is why she just wanted to leave and have her fans hear the album in any way they could.
A singer by the name of Gene Pitney wrote the song “Love my life away”, actually played every instrument, and produced it all by his lonesome. The song is great too. Joss Stone is smokin’!
“We don’t need that much money. We just don’t.”
Easy to say when you already have that much money.
That’s called “nailing it”!
I would totally bang Joss Stone.

Joss is exhibiting the trend towards belittling “studio artists” in favor of artists who a largely perfomers rather than composers. I am not suggeting that Lily Allen is an important songwriter, but there are excellent songwriters who are simply not gifted performers or photogenic stars who are hurt by this sentiment. Don’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs in order to ingratiate to an amoral mob.
Then songwriters who don’t perform will just have to creatively adapt to the new economic reality of recorded material not being a sellable good, just like everyone else should’ve done already. I don’t have any specific ideas or suggestions on how to do that, but that’s not my job, it’s theirs.
You don’t have any ideas, but you are certain that you are right and other people are wrong? Maybe your unspoken idea is that they should just work a day job and forget about focusing on the work that they are actually talented at. Because they should be grateful for the opportunity to provide you with free entertainment.
they’ll still get performance income for the singing of their copyrights live. The future is broader licensing of digital/live outlets/forums etc.
Umm, talking about non-photogenic, have you ever looked at anyone in the rock, punk, and metal categories? Ever look at most rap and hip-hop artists for that matter? Heck, even some of the newer pop singers aren’t exactly “photogenic”.
And about not being a “gifted performer”, if you can write, play, and even sing the songs, what more is needed for a performance? Technically, you don’t really even need to be able to sing the songs, just go out and perform them, and get someone else to sing for you. Carlos Santana does that, and just think of how big some of his tours have been.
If it’s good music performed by an artist who can play the music well, weather they can put on a dog and pony show with it or not, then there would be no problem getting fans to come out for live performances.
And if they don’t want to play their music live, there’s plenty of other places to put your music. Movies, TV, advertisements, websites, there’s plenty of places to go if you want to just right, and not perform.

Does it mean anything that I’m 61 listen to Joss Stone “she’s the new Janis” some say & only heard of Lilly Allen because of her take on file sharing
I would totally fk Lily Allen & perhaps try to change her opinion on Piracy. If it wasn’t for piracy, I wouldn’t know about her & I wouldn’t want to fk her if given the opportunity. I am afraid that she is just brainwashed by the mafia who she is employed by. The kitty is good, even though she is mixed up. She just needs to be re-trained as she has been brainwashed too long. Boycot mafia! I shared some of your files Lily Allen also & I made sure that I put them on the internet for a lifetime so they would have to remove the internet before your music will be off. I couldn’t help myself.
Kisses & Love,
Reasoned Pirate
@2 Great idea Solitaire. The money is only going to the music corps. Might as well send 20 bucks her way. Oh and a rose=P
Wow, you mean musician may have to work for a living without huge companies extorting money out of the public for them?
Welcome to the work force.
I kinda like lily when she isn’t pretending to be the center of the universe.
woooooo go Joss Stone!!! I don’t know her but already think she is awesome, going to listen to her song now see what there like
Thank you! Finally someone speaking sense who can clearly see the only place the music industry can go from here. I’ve been saying this for the last few years. In reference to the comment above, I wouldn’t generally want bang joss stone, but for saying what she;s said, I’d probably give her a quickie.
lets make her the new minister for e-commerce or what ever it is. just drop the accent!
