Iras, The African Rap Storyteller’s Discography For Free
Introducing a FreakBits guest post by Iras – an African rap lyricist, composer & storyteller who decided to release his entire discography for free.
My name is Iras and I’m an African rap lyricist, composer & storyteller currently living in the south of France where I’m taking a master degree of computer science, majoring in artificial intelligence.
I’m part of a generation that thinks certain kinds of entertainment should be free so I hooked up with the Free Culture movement in order to further that philosophical concept.
In any case my entire upcoming discography will be completely & utterly free which will be digitally distributed on different platforms (Mininova, IsoHunt, iTunes, Jamendo, etc)
I’ve always been “on the other side of the fence” regarding the torrent community. In other words I was always among the guys downloading. Now that I broadcast some contents I really do think the music industry should do some soul searching since the torrent community could literally revolutionize (Jamendo is a great example of that) the music business, if the latter wasn’t trying to crush torrent platforms with countless lawsuits.
On the other hand I do understand the side of the copyrights holders who do not want/like to be “robbed” by those who download their craft constantly for free. But as far as I’m concerned I was one of those “robbers” but now that I’m a copyright holder myself I can’t possibly be on the side of the RIAA (and all the others) without being the worst hypocrite.
Personally I’m trying to replicate the television business model by broadcasting my craft for free but I finance it through advertisement. It’s an other way of “doing business” and I just hope everyone would try to see things differently instead of holding on to the old ways.
And it brings me to my album which was released on June 25th. The project is entitled “The Pilgrimage Of Samael Angel” and it will be a story unfolding from the first song (of the first album released last June) to the last one (of the third album which will be released on June 25th 2011, so there’ll be a chapter every year on the same day) because this project is a trilogy :
It is the tale of an angel who was born an impure being because of the sins of his parents.
Those sins will be eating him alive until it reaches the critical point where it’ll be crippling his soul, turning him into a magnificent devil.
Ergo he was born in sin, he will live a sinful life and will subsequently die because of those sins…….
