Despite Piracy No Longer Being a Threat, Microsoft Takes Action Against It
Earlier this week we wrote an article about a recent interview with the managing director of Microsoft Philippines Inc., in which he stated that Microsoft did not believe piracy was a threat any longer.
A few days later the same company launched “Consumer Action Day”, which is meant to warn users of the dangers of piracy and inform them of just how badly it affects the industry. Well… this is awkward
The software giant is hitting back the piracy that they claim poses no threat to them… hard. Microsoft will be putting out educational materials and launching ‘enforcement actions’ in over 70 different countries. They even have a hot-line where you can report any piracy you may come across. The number is 1-800 RU LEGIT. Seriously.
The source article for this story goes on for six or so paragraphs about how pirated copies of windows are more likely to get viruses. The exact same thing the guy said in the interview before except instead of denouncing piracy as not even a worry this time it is something important enough to warrant spending millions of dollars to inform the public about.
There is a news story here, but it is not the fact that Microsoft is launching this huge anti-piracy corporate holiday. Nor is it that they said piracy is no longer a threat. It is the fact that they did both in a four day span of time.

But you forget that MicroSoft has no proper concept of time.. The time estimation of file transfers being the perfect example of it ;p
You misinterpret them. Piracy is not a threat. But it’s a great way of making money off of lawsuits.
Microsoft… You mean that software company from the 90′s? I thought they had folded.
The Microsoft Genuine Advantage and the activation of the software is the biggest reason I use Linux. I’m sick of being treated by a criminal when I pay good money for software and due to their buggy software I need to reinstall it on my computer and have to go through the whole phone activation. I have better things to do with my time then sitting on the phone for several hours.
So you spend hours at a time fixing all the problems you come across in GNU/Linux instead
;)
problems on linux? like?
Tell Microsoft to come up with cheaper rates.Let them have reduced prices especially for africa and asia and that will reduce piracy.
Ibrahim(Kenya)
Nothing but Greed,Thats all,GREED……………
Yeah, if Microsoft release a lower price
it can be bought by someone even when they have low greed
lower price = many buyers and low piracy
higher price = lower buyers and high piracy
money do not grow on trees so piracy can happen
“Microsoft Has The Biggest Share Of The Market.
Microsoft Creates Safe Software.
Microsoft Stuff Are User Friendly.
Microsoft Trusts Its Customers.
Microsoft Loves You.
You Love Microsoft….”

Made By Guess Who…
no, microsoft only has biggest share on the desktop/notebook market :)
They also have the largest share on the Netbook market.
Someone should report Microsoft to the Anti-piracy groups for selling bootleg copies of Windows 7 marketed as Windows Vista.
Windows Vista is far too corrupted as an OS to be sold legally!!
I want to see people recording their phone calls and putting them on youtube – should be funny :P
meh… your giving Microsoft a hard time. At least they don’t try to seek and destroy potential customers in court. Microsoft is mostly going against piracy which people are profiting from…. which to me is fine since I think that individuals selling/making profit from pirated copies of windows is wrong.
Not everyone is selling. Some just want a collection without that big price. If the web is being controlled by the government the www means nothing.
The Phillipines is’nt really a trusted source for Microsoft policy. It should have been asked at the main headquarters in Seattle.
Maybe we should start up an anti-monopoly day. Let’s see, it’s fine for MS to shaft Netscape. It’s fine for them to bundle free music player, office tools, web browser etc with no option to select some non-MS alternative and effectively stops ANY competition because nobody can compete with ‘free’.
Nobody can compete with free, MS knows that. It’s why they are trying to stop people getting their OS for free. The model they used to get to the top is also the model that is hurting them.
You got that right……..
Every Microsoft product I have ever owned has been purchased legally. However, that amounts to only one product. Atari Microsoft BASIC for my 8-bit Atari computers.
No he doesn’t. If you couldn’t compete with free Microsoft would be bankrupt and Linux would be king.
Microsoft doesn’t really care about taking actions about piracy. They know that if you crack it, it means you will not buy it, so who cares?
thanks for the article..
I think many will buy microsoft products inspite of their products being cracked..
reasons for pirating microsoft software
#1 ive got a legit vista(doh) os and all the os security
updates fail but the pirated copy of ms office 2007 updates fine.
Why would I download crud like Windows 7? It isn’t even WORTH wasting bandwidth on! I’m against illegally downloading files, but this is pitiful… Why should I download Windows and punish myself like that? It’s just… twisted.
Irony: Microsoft chasing people for pirating software they stole and reverse engineered from others.
I personally tend to favour SSuite Office’s free office suites. Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their applications very small and efficient.

hahahaha, u know those designer monopoly game sets? like sponge bob monopoly, etc.. someone can steal this idea: MS Monopoly, do not pass go, do not collect 200 torrents lmao
(i want the get outta jail free card)
I have dozens of licences for xp from pcs I have stripped, any other software vendor allows the transfer from one pc to another in the case that the first is no longer in use.
Microsoft license the software and retain ownership of original media (read your eula) so even the cd you ‘bought’ from bill is not actually yours and you are in effect hiring the software until your pc breaks or is rebuilt to the point where the os decides it does not retain enough original components to allow you to continue.
I use ubuntu on my home machines, people need to take a stand against microsofts bloated legacy ridden junk, even windows 7 has done nothing to reverse this situation as people either refuse to take it up or go over to other os’s. (vista service pack 3 would be more accurate, the platform is the same)
are you serious?
wow! money hungry assholes…
some one deserves a slap…
incase your left wondering who that may be, it the saps that actually call that number…
jzzz ¬¬
id make fake torrents all day and call them just to use up there pathetic resources… xD
prob wont but meh… o_O
this whole scandal reminds me of christianity…
nothing against Christians, but the churches do like their money…
