Brit Attempts Record Bittorrent Swarm Size
Records are made to be broken, or at least that’s the philosophy one UK man is taking. He wants to break the record for the most number of seeders on a torrent. The current record, as far as we’re aware, was set by an EZTV torrent and stands at around 124,000.
Bittorrent is a scalable system. Unlike most distribution methods, it doesn’t have much in the way of slowdown as the number of people involved increases. In fact, quite often it will increase in speed as more people join in. It’s a wonderfully efficient way to get data around.
There are some questions, and experimental limits though that exist purely theoretically. One of those is just how ‘big’ a torrent can be, and how many seeds it’s possible to get. According to the attempt page, the reason behind it was partly to see how big it could get, and part just for the desire to have a record established.
The attempt was first announced in the Pirate Party UK irc channel, on June 30th, and has had a slow start, with a high so far of around 50, but it’s dropped off a little since. The content of the torrent is a simple image file, in total around 40kb (although a more appropriate choice would have been a copy of ELO’s album “A New World Record”). “The aim isn’t to max out or burden clients, but to have a small torrent constantly running,” we were told. “Just load it into your torrent client, and hit Force Start to keep it running, that’s all you have to do.”
The torrent can be obtained from both the piratebay, and EZTV, or by using these magnet links for utorrent and Vuze. We’ll keep you posted on how well it does.

Seems a little strange to be featuring an article on a torrent with less than 50 seeds a week in…clearly nobody cares about this meaningless attempt at a who cares “record”.

it’s only 50 because no one is giving it any press
so now its getting press and you’re complaining?
get a life.
I’ll be supporting this.
Heroes doesn’t deserve such a record.
Seeding :)
It looks like the only tracker is OBT, which seems to be down presently.
Use PublicBT and DHT :)
Cool idea, I’m seeding. Had to add the publicbt tracker to get it download.
I could hardly believe the size was just 40kb. I mean thats like less than a second to download fully. The size should have been at least 100MB shouldn’t it of so there is actually some transferring going on.
nah, the whole idea I think is to just see how “big” of a swarm they can achieve….
Honestly though, I don’t think it’ll take off :) Better off seeding some 0-day movie/cam/etc…..and take it from that :) I’ve seen some very “popular” Open source torrents too (OpenOffice, etc…).
seeding
I only just found out about this or I would have been in from the start.
I like world records, I was one of the early firefox world record downloaders
Seeding 24/7
just release some starcraft2 torrent und you will have your world record ffs
Just checked, only 8 seeders, that’s a pathetic attempt at world record.
Time to change topic tile to “Brit Attempts Pathetic Attempt at Record Bittorrent Swarm Size”
only 9 seeders shizzle fizzle eh…………
No one give a shit and have more important things to do that’s why the torrent has never had any more than 50 seeds. This man seriously needs to get a life.
Should be: Brit succeeds in setting world record for smallest public bittorrent swarm
