Aston Kutcher Film Premier Cammed… by Kutcher

13 minutes of new film Killers was broadcast on the Internet during it’s premier. It’s no ordinary case of camming though, as the person responsible, the films star Aston Kutcher, is the one behind it.

Film star and Hollywood ‘Punkd master’ Aston Kutcher is in the spotlight again. While some might consider it one of his stunts, this one could land him in jail. At the premier of his latest movie, Killers, Kutcher broadcast the first 13 minutes of the premier online.

This has caused a storm of outrage from many in the industry that say he’s not “treating the issue of piracy seriously”. However, the issue of piracy hurting the industry still has little evidence to back it up. In fact the movie industry is doing better than ever, with the MPAA reporting just 3 months ago, that “global box office receipts reached an all time high of $29.9 billion” in 2009.

Kutcher was unapologetic about the act. “Everybody calls people airing stuff on the web piracy,” he told Access Hollywood, “just because they’re not making money off of it yet. If they (executives) can figure out how to make money off of it, they won’t call it piracy anymore.” He is also adamant that he hasn’t broken any laws.

If only that were so. Under the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005, he did indeed commit an offense, unless he had the permission of the copyright holders (Kutcher, while a Producer on the film, is almost certainly not the copyright holder), and means that he can be imprisoned for up to 3 years, or fined, or both.

While it’s unlikely that he will be prosecuted, it does underscore the film industry’s determination to stick to the status-quo of the last few decades.

He only did this because he knows if he can never work in Hollywood again, there are hundreds of venture capitalists in Silicon Valley who’d be happy to throw money at him. Because he’s popular on Twitter. (Seriously, that’s why. Silicon Valley VCs are really stupid.)

Not that I’m attacking Ashton Kutcher, though. He just gained a lot of cool points for this.

    • OK So lets have a look see here

and Since 2000, only 2001, 2002 and 2003 have EVER seen 17,000 Million Dollars

and since the 90s, Revenue has been steadly increasing, with 2007 being the year Studios saw 5-figure returns between 2002-2007 within 9000 Million

The Internet, along with Youtube, and Piracy have helped Studios and has brang alot of good fortune

If only they could see that

I hope he will be brought to trial, maybe charging with copyright infringement a public figure will raise public awareness on the nonsense made into law.

  • Wow I always though he seemed like a douche, but this definitely won him some points with me. I would love to see them go after him for copyright infringement, it would give a public face to the need for the archaic film industry to modernize their business model and stop trying to force everyone to play by their rules.

  • This was essentially just a publicity stunt for a crappy movie. Ashton had went on several talk shows prior to the movie’s release saying that he will be “pirating” the first 13 minutes of the movie. Taking that into consideration, I’m guessing the studio had no problem with it considering they probably helped take part in this marketing decision.

  • It’s unfair the MAFIA will not prosecute a known celebrity.

I remember when 22-year-old Samantha Tumpach spent two nights in jail last December for recording her friends singing “Happy Birthday” at a movie theater. For what? For capturing less than four minutes of commercials and a bit of “Twilight: New Moon”, and it weren’t even directed at the screen. She was charged with a felony! She was facing up to three years in jail. Bloody hypocrites.

The usher, cops, judges and MAFIAA must be no brainers, retards, morons, etc. How can they be convinced that Samantha was camming the movie (in plain view). If you watched the clip then “normal” people (even lower than average mortals) will see it as clear as day that SHE WAS NOT PIRATING, you brainless idiots.

For 13 minutes recording Aston Kutcher SHOULD spend at least 2 nights in jail. Hero or not, what goes around should come around.

    Peace!

  • wow.
must be for a legit purpose,
    marketing ploy.
    :)

  • And while Mr. Kutcher is camming 13 minutes of the movie, thousands of people are downloading a full-length, high-def quality copy of the movie on the Internet. What harm has Kutcher done? None that hadn’t been done already. Great PR stunt, tho!

No amount of MPAA lawyering will ever defeat the benefits of free online distribution.

  • double-WOW

This “camming” is obviously a publicity stunt – a desperate attempt to try to revive a complete dud.

Interesting that it’s 13 minutes of a 100 minute film. That’s an amazing coincidence, as it’s the same “leak-ratio” as when a record label “leaks” two songs of a 15-track album (a common practice).

Nice to know that Freakbits has not been abandoned. (I had just deleted it from my bookmarks yesterday after noticing FB has been dead since April) :)

  • If you are going to write an article about a celebrity, it would certainly be nice if you could spell their name correctly. His name is ASHton Kutcher for the record. Use Google responsibly.

  • This is a publicity stunt, nothing more. He’s only sampling the first couple minutes to drive in people and cause controversy.

  • Theb-day case is one of the most disgusting things MAFIAA has caused till now with all this copywrong frenzy of theirs and their complete inability to work with ppl to generate more cash and more satisfaction.

In any case, if this 13-min thing is not something set up by the industry, it poses some challenge to MAFIAA’s anti-piracy policies. Will be interesting to see what happens.

  • [...] didn’t do great either, despite attempts by Kutcher to bring awareness to the film, and to the stupidity of blaming cams, but enough to take it above the previous [...]

  • @DARKFIB3R
Normally I never upload cam’s, but if I got my hands on that one I would sure post it on TPB :D

  • I suspect his 13 minites could be defended under fair use given the full context but I am pleased to see an insider getting the point of the power of the internet.

  • [...] Aston Kutcher Film Premier Cammed… by Kutcher [...]

  • I can’t stand this muthaf….!
First he gives us REAL motorcycle riders a bad name by posting some idiotic video of himself riding while recording himself like some lil bitch taking myspace pics.
Cam inside a theater is illegal. He knows it and we all know it. I’m all for the piracy, it’s part of the ever growing technology but, throw his ass in jail!!

  • his movies are shit anyways… appeals to bro humor like super bad and whatnot. sounds like a last effort to get his content advertised. I wouldn’t be surprised if the industry has ever thought employing such tactics to get the pirate niche to potential see their failed movies.
