Anti-Piracy Hunger Strike Causes Musician to Collapse

Back in July we reported that in apparent desperation at high music piracy rates in Nigeria, music industry groups arranged a hunger strike to draw attention to their cause. One musician has now collapsed.

As we reported earlier on TorrentFreak, showing despair at the massive levels of music piracy in Nigeria, music industry groups have tried to attract the attention of the country’s president by taking drastic measures. One of these was a mass hunger strike.

Now, a musician identified as “Yellow King” has collapsed while taking part in a hunger-strike rally at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. The man suddenly slumped onto the grass and there were “frantic efforts” to resuscitate him.

The musician was rushed to Ajayi Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Musician Tony Okoroji said: “We are going to continue to stay here hungry until somebody is ready to listen to us and offer to fight the cankerworm of piracy.”

    oh well let them starve

  • lol.

  • those guys need a doctor ,, get thier heads checked ,, cause they ain’t thinkin with a full deck

  • Hmm. I wonder where his fans are… Or he does not have any? Is his music pirated? How popular it is… Just not much info to judge aether them or their pirates.

Tried to find this guys music trough google and did not found any info at all… Brings some questions on how it is pirated then… Digitally or not?

  • im stuffing my fatass with fried chicken as i read this….and utorrent is running! haha

  • With the media in the U.S. being all about “Obama is numbah one super guy!” and “can these people survive on an island?”, it’s impossible to get any legitimate news. Torrentfreak and Freakbits are the only places I visit that are covering the story, so I can safely say that the vast majority of the world won’t hear about this at all.

Way to waste your resources, Africa.

  • Fat, white millionaire businessmen and musicians see Nigerian piracy levels. They are outraged that they are spending their money on food instead of CDs and vow “to teach those darn Africans all about hunger and sacrifice!”

  • This will be all fixed when Obama becomes President of the World. There will be no fat millionaire WHITE fokes allowed. All their money will be given to poor people of color and the Ultra Rich will rule. Don’t worry, be happy. Obama is God , just ask him !

  • This is really funny, infact i am thinking of putting a site online where my fellow Nigerians can put links to different Naija content and download them for free like the services rendered by http://www.dl4all.com but till them i download GIGS per day my utorrent is running as i type.

  • Let me get this straight. They are starving themselves to try to prevent piracy?

No one has even heard of those artists, the reason they are not making money is because they suck. I couldn’t find any of that guy’s music online.

  • It’s kinda like those PETA ads, “Hey, stop eating meat and we’ll stop showing pictures of nude women.”

All I can say is, pass me some more bacon and recommend me some torrents!

  • So, apparently people in Africa are starving?

Is it really PC to do such a stunt?

unheard of “Yellow”: “I’ll starve for x days til you pay me x million for free!”

African: “We do that all the time mon’.”

Of course, he was “identified” as “Yellow King”, so it could be anyone, maybe some jPop artist?

  • Sounds like one of those Nigerian scam emails.

  • [...] Apparently musicians who are upset about the rates of unauthorized file sharing in Nigeria chose to go on a hunger strike to protest such things. It’s really difficult to think of a worse, less productive idea. [...]

  • tasty: “mon”? Are they Jamaican now? :)

  • Absolutely. Why not? Being Jamaican would be much more productive than the regular, Nigerian scammer.

I dealt with one, one time on craigslist when I was back home, and he said he’d kill me if I didn’t do as he said. I replied to him with picture of some decapitated Nigerians, and he never mailed me back.

  • all jokes aside nigerians, you should try to stay alive and work towards more profitable ways of life. dont (essentially) kill yourselves, because you are mad your still poor, even if (some) people do like you, but dont pay for your stuff.

and all you googlers, try search engines that cater to nigeria, or is google ftw there, too?

  • Why is everyone focusing on fake cds when it comes to piracy of Nigerian music? You can copy a million times more songs on your hard drive dan on one miserably fake cd yet no one is talking about it. Incase anyone does get info on epiracy of Nigerian music, please mail it to me, i’m doing a study on it. Thanks
