88-Year Old Avatar Pirate Caught in Theater

avatar pirateAn 88-year old man, carrying a walking stick and a camcorder, has been caught by movie theater personnel when he tried to make a private copy of the movie Avatar. The man was planning to show the film to his wife who could not make her way to the theater.

Recording a high profile blockbuster such as Avatar in a movie theater is a serious offense, so when the cinema manager at Glendale spotted a pirate, the police were called in immediately.

The man, who was probably unaware of the many high quality pirated copies that exist online, hoped to share the film with his wife at home in Australia, but swift police action prevented this.

The recording was deleted on the spot, but the police were smart enough not to arrest the movie cammer. They let him stay at the movie theater to finish the film.

[sarcasm] Imagine the evil that would have happened if the wife had seen the movie!!!1! [/sarcasm]

    • I would fork my eyes out with a fork covered in Citric Acid than watch Avatar. :)

      • Indeed. Avatar is an epic failure and just proofs once and for all that the current generation of movie goers are too stupid to see the difference between a good and a bad movie.

    Seriously?

You really think an 88-year-old would be a cammer?

They really want to learn some basics.

  • Least the theater had some respect for the old man. +1 to good theater managemant who aren’t manipulated by the MPAA

    • My thoughts as well.

police is treated as a plural noun, so you should say the police “were” called, not “was” called.

  • No they was an incredibly confused/stupid old person, but illegal is as unlawful does

  • Anyone know this guys address? I’ll hook him up!

  • So it is ok now to have a camera in theater, and if your caught you just get your footage deleted yay. If I go to the theater I will remember this and try to bring some recording equipment along. Its a great day indeed.
Finally a reason to go back to the theater. :-)

    • If your camera writes to a hard drive, not a tape, you can even use your computer to recover the file undamaged! (I don’t encourage you to try camming a movie though. Not worth it.)

      • Aren’t there like wifi-sd cards around already? Now all you need is a camcorder which supports it, a laptop, and a wifi-sender in the parking lot.

  • Typical Officer John, missing the perfect opportunity to catch what quite possibly could have been the biggest uploader in history… “No one ever suspects the geriatric.”

  • That`s why we need some reviewing on copyrights. I mean, the industry would lose millions from an old man trying to ease the suffering from his beloved wife.. [/sarcasm]

Major fail here. At least they were sensible enough not to arrest/prosecute the man…

    • Opening the door for any exception gives precedent for all exceptions. It’s just nice that he didn’t have any charges brought against him but they just as easily could have.

Without going in too much depth, the course of action taken was the only appropriate one short of arresting him. Letting him film it would have been outright inexcusable, as it’s not even the manager’s right to give permission.

I may not like the current copyright laws, nor the sentences that get passed down, but all things considered, this was the ideal outcome for all involved.

Old man probably had one of those T.v looking camcorders haha

  • I’d love it if that guy came trundling up to the box office with one of those old monster VHS camcorders. The ones that had the VHS deck connected via a cable. I can just see him setting up the tripod before the film like he was recording little Buddy’s birthday party.

And there was really no reason to prosecute the guy – making him sit through the rest of AVATAR was probably cruel & unusual punishment enough.
