3G Mobile Networks Overloaded By Pirates

Accessing the Internet via mobile devices is an increasingly popular activity but the high consumption of bandwidth is causing problems for operators.

dongleMobile 3G functionality is a dream come true for Internet users who aren’t tied to a desktop PC all day. With 3G enabled devices its possible for users to access the Internet from almost anywhere – at half-decent speeds too.

However, 3G users’ thirst for bandwidth is increasing rapidly which in turn is putting huge strain on mobile infrastructure.

According to a new report, data traffic is doubling every 6 months globally, and at an even quicker rate in certain countries, with France’s second largest operator SFR, a laptop with a dongle can consume 450 times more bandwidth than a regular mobile phone.

But perhaps the most important pointer to the source of the mobile data crisis (aside from much-needed infrastructure upgrades) is the use of such services for downloading music and movies.

The report states that just 10% of mobile data users consume around 80% of all data traffic. This statistic sounds about right, but remember that SFR is owned by media company Vivendi, so please consume with a grain of salt.

…and please wait until you get home to download you movies if you can wait – you know it makes sense.

Well, the “legal” alternatives big media corps are pushing surely consumes bandwidth too? Blaming bandwidth shortage on pirates while pushing for legal streaming and downloading doesn’t really make sense imho.

    • Not to mention all the AP groups out there that are false seeding all their shit just to take IPs for DMCA claims… They are causing just as big a problem as the pirates are… Networks are being used as both an AP and piracy tool and then are told that they should police their own networks… WTF

In the uk speeds are nowhere near advertised speeds, are capped to ridiculous limits of 3 gb, the highest 15gb per month. Connections are rubbish. Some Dj’s on my station using 3g dongles cant even maintain a consistent upload on a 128 kbps stream. as usual the uk will remain to be a technological 3rd world country. it make me laugh that even the likes of korea are more advanced than we can ever hope to be.

  • rikard. At no point in this article does it blame pirates. That was your assumption. Re-read it. :)

    • qwisp, this kinda sets the mood, being in larger font and bold at the top of the article….. “3G Mobile Networks Overloaded By Pirates”

  • I’m curious… Here in Germany you can only get 5GiB/Monath contracts. Over this amount, your speed will be throttled to GPRS so it is pretty useless for d/l music/videos

  • @qwisp: the title of the post itself blames pirates. Re-read it.

  • or just leave uTorrent running and access it with the WebUI…

  • Here in portland, or I’ve got the new 4g. Love it. I don’t even have a internet connection at home. I have one anywhere. It has built in 3g with a 5gb cap per month but I hardly use it, and I never go over my 5gb/unlimited 4g.

    love it
